The Silver Jubilee Bridge, Runcorn to Widnes, Cheshire
Details
Accessibility
This bridge is tolled but to improve accessibility and traffic flow the toll is charged by the company 'Merseyflow' via 'free-flow tolling'. This means that there are no physical toll booths that have to be accessed.
Costs can differ based on type of vehicle, the area you live in, and method of payment:
- There is toll-free travel for pedestrians, cyclists and those using public transport
- Blue badge holders can cross both the bridge an unlimited number of times at no extra charge once they have successfully registered and paid a £5 one-off registration fee.
- Anyone, can save up to 10% on the unregistered toll/charge by registering for a pre-pay sticker account and paying a £5 one-off fee.
- Any car or small van drivers can cap their costs by buying an 'unlimited travel' or 'off-peak' monthly pass.
- If you are unable to pay this online you can pre-pay without registering for a ticket from a local, participating news agents.
- Some lucky (and eligible) Halton residents can pay an annual £10 admin fee and cross the bridge as many times as they like at no extra cost.
You can drive over both bridges without registering, but by doing this you will have to pay the full unregistered toll/charge cost for each journey you make either in advance or by 11.59 pm the day after you cross. If you fall to pay before this deadline you will recieve notice of a fine.
This system has been lauded as unfair by many locals as this bridge was previously free to cross for 60 years prior to much needed 3 year long refurbishments from 2017-2020. This decision by the Government to not support a toll-free bridge was landmark as this was the first crossing ever to be tolled in the UK after previously being free.
