Brief description

Please note that our photographs show Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery PRIOR to its redevelopment as The Amelia Scott Centre.

"When inside The Amelia Scott make sure to visit one of our libraries or take time to enjoy any of the collections and exhibitions that will be open throughout the year.  The collection at The Amelia was founded by the Tunbridge Wells Natural History and Philosophical Society in 1885. The Society established our first town museum at the Literary and Scientific Society’s rooms on the Pantiles.

The Council adopted the collection in 1918. Amelia Scott was a supporter of a municipal museum and library and believed it was ‘a necessity that cannot be postponed indefinitely’.

We have a long history of collecting and engagement with the local community. The Amelia’s collection reflects many aspects of the story of Tunbrst-block-26idge Wells and the High Weald. We care for around 60,000 objects covering local history, natural history, archaeology, fine and decorative arts, and social history.

Our collections are available throughout the building, with displays exploring the themes of the High Weald, Subbuteo, scientific and political innovation, Tunbridge Wells as the first holiday resort, and more!

We also have frequent exhibitions, to see what's coming up next, visit the What’s On page. The History of The Wells is kindly sponsored by Thomson Snell & Passmore:

Adult library:

The adult library offers a wide range of services – from free access to books, computers, internet, and information, to the hire of music, audio books and films. If you're not a member, just ask one of our friendly staff to help you join, it couldn't be simpler!

Children’s library:

The children’s library is a space to relax and read with younger children. A bright and engaging place for our young readers to be inspired and to allow their creative imaginations to blossom. It’s such a fun place to enjoy… from observing constellations on the ceiling, finding cosy reading nooks to climb into, or watching a train travel around the library! There’ll be plenty of storytelling sessions and the permanent reading tree will provide book ideas for all ages."
