Details
Accessibility:
Paths around the grounds are largely well maintained but they vary between paved, gravel and grass. There are steps at some points and the paths can be narrow or get slippery when wet. The medieval chapel is laid to flagstones and quarry tiles and is relatively flat with a very low step at the threshold.
Parking and toilets are available some way from the main building and chapel, with further toilets available next to the chapel itself.
Brief Description:
The Grade II listed Upton Castle is believed to be mainly 13th century. The original castle was owned by the Norman Malefant family but in the 16th century it passed to the Bowen family and later in the 1700s was sold to John Tasker. The castle saw a regeneration and extension project in between 1828 and 1860. The castle building is a private residence and not open to the public.
The gardens were restored and reopened by volunteers in 2007.
The remaining medieval exterior sections of the building are to north east of the range which includes three early towers and sections of curtain wall.
The listed historic gardens are open to the public and contain rare tree and shrub specimens, a formal rose garden and a 19th century walled vegetable garden. There are woodland walks which lead past medieval fish ponds to the River Cleddau estuary.
