Brief description

"Known as the 'Hospital of Hope,' we provide specialist cancer services to over 1.5 million people in South East Wales and beyond."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velindre_Cancer_Centre

"The Velindre Cancer Centre (WelshCanolfan Ganser Felindre) is a specialist facility offering inpatient and outpatient care for cancer patients in Whitchurch, Cardiff, Wales.

The site is currently managed and owned by the Velindre University NHS Trust, and was previously owned by the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.[2]

The facility was established as Velindre Hospital in 1956.[3] The name is a corruption of Melin Tref (transl. Mill Place).[3] The first linear particle accelerator was installed in 1961.[4]

The hospital became Velindre Cancer Centre in 1994[3] and a new radiotherapy unit opened in 2000.[3]

A new Maggie's Centre, designed by Dow Jones Architects[5] and funded by the Wales Government, opened in 2019.[6][7]

In July 2022, the comedian Rhod Gilbert, who is a patron of the centre, announced that he was being treated for cancer at the centre.[8]"

Transport

"You’ll need to arrange for your own transport to and from the hospital (unless you are in receipt of certain benefits as outlined below).

  • If you are on Income Support, Family Credit, Income-based Jobseekers Allowance or Disability Working Allowance, we will reimburse public transport fares (or the cost of petrol). Please ask at the outpatient reception desk. You need to provide evidence of receiving benefit (such as your benefit book) and also evidence of the amount you have paid for your journey.

  • If you are not on Income Support but your income is low, ask for Form HC1 from your local Department of Social Security (DSS), Post Office or the hospital social services department. This may take some weeks to process but back payments of three months or less will be taken into account. When you have received your certificate bring it back as evidence to the outpatient reception desk and you will receive help with your fares. This certificate lasts for 6 months. You will need to re-apply after that.

If you get help with your fares and need an escort to come to the hospital with you, you can claim their fares as well. You will need a letter from your family doctor or hospital doctor to say that you need an escort.

Nearest train stations are Landaff and Coryton (roughly 10-15 minutes' walk from Velindre).

Cardiff bus Numbers 25 & 24 have stops outside of the centre. For full timetable information please see the Cardiff bus web site.
