"St Michael’s is a redundant, Grade I listed church of considerable importance. The building can be traced to the late 12th – early 13th century, and its setting reflects its ancient origins.
The 15th and 16th centuries brought much change to the church: the chapels and north transept were removed and the tower was heightened. In the late 1850s the church was ‘restored’ – this time by John Campbell, 2nd Earl of Cawdor, who commissioned re-roofing, re-flooring and re-fenestration. As a legacy, the Cawdor arms decorate the tiled chancel floor. Ample parking.
Church door can be stiff so give it a really good push!"

Highlights- 12th century square limestone font with scalloped decoration
- Carved medieval ‘death-like’ faces on the arcades
- East window by Heaton, Butler and Bayne depicting the Ascension (presented by the parishioners in memory of Lt. Col. Francis and Lady Victoria Lambton, whose family lived at Brownslade Farm; Lady Victoria was Queen Victoria’s god-daughter and a rendering of Balmoral Castle is included in the window)
- Window depicting St Michael in the slype, which connects the aisle to the chancel (this romantic rendering of the saint, dated to about 1900, is believed to have also been the work of Heaton Butler and Bayne)
- Numerous memorials to the Lambton family in the south transept
- Window in the south transept depicting the Crucifixion, made by Hardman to a design now known to have been by Pugin — it has been described as the best example of a Pugin window in any Welsh church and is now the sole survivor of the five that Hardman made for the church in the early 1850s
- Grade II listed horse ‘mounting block’ by the churchyard wall.
