Accessibility

The Owners of Westonbury Mill Water Gardens advise that the great majority (80%) of the Gardens are accessible including for wheelchair users. There are a number of grassy paths and boardwalks and the different areas of the garden are connected by bridges and pathways. Some pathways run alongside the stream and other stretches of water, so maybe slippery or muddy. Disability Toilet

Brief description

5 acres of privately owned Gardens founded in 1969 by Richard Pim who, after buying Westonbury Mill, went onto build the beautiful Water Gardens in its grounds, including a number of eclectic and unique Follies including a gigantic, working, water-powered Cuckoo Clock; an igloo dome made of colourful glass bottles and stone water mill which features carved, stone gargoyles - one of which spouts water from the water pumped to the top of the water mill. The Gardens and follies have featured on BBC Gardener's World.

A stream meanders through the Gardens which also include a number of ponds, other waterways, a bog garden, a wildflower meadow and lush planting.

Since 2021, Westonbury Mill and Water Gardens have been under the new ownership of Mark and Deborah Constable who plan to extend the Gardens whilst maintaining the legacy of the founder.

Before I update you on the garden progress, I must report the sad news that Richard Pim, the creator of Westonbury Mill Water Gardens and its amazing follies, died late last year. Without Richard's vision, hard work and incredible skills, none of this would be here. He is a great loss and our sympathy goes to his wife and family.

We are now busy preparing the garden for the coming season with particular attention to clearing winter vegetation from the pond and cairn garden - critical if we want to prevent algae bloom once it warms up.

We have now raised up the Japanese Tea House following a flood last winter. The Tea House itself is now completed, so you can walk over to it, go in and take a look. However, I am still to build a bridge going across to it as well as a walkway around it, so there are more phases to come!

I'm also pleased to let our regular visitors know that I have finally sorted out the leak to the rill, so, for the first time, it is finally working as planned!

We have also installed fibre optic broadband to the cafe and this will be made available to visitors free of charge.

2022: By Bus: Bus services 494,495,496 and 504 from Leominster call at Pembridge village - however services are very infrequent so always check with the bus operator before planning to travel. Link: Pembridge – bustimes.org.

By Train: Nearest railway station - Leominster (Approx. 9 miles). This station has step-free access to platform 1 only ( trains toward Shrewsbury). Platform 2 (trains to Hereford) is only accessible via a step-bridge; there is no lift available). No platform-staff available at this station. No toilets. A coffee shop is adjacent to the station..

By Taxi: Leominster Taxis & Travel Co. is situated close to the Station

The Watermill Cafe - Visitors are free to visit the Cafe independently of the Gardens . (Cafe telephone no : 01544 388444). Serving tea/coffee, light refreshments and lunches. James Maddox runs the café and has built a strong reputation for the quality of his home cooked light lunches, cakes, cream teas, quiches and salad and toasted sandwiches plus, of course, teas, coffees and soft drinks (see full menu below). Hot food is served daily, until 3.00 p.m.
Ample seating is available, inside and outside and the café is open to customers, whether you choose to go round the garden or not.
Booking is not required although large groups are encouraged to let James know in advance particularly if anyone has any special dietary requirements.
