"The original Whittington Castle was a motte-and-bailey castle. In the 13th century this was replaced as a Castle with buildings around a courtyard with the exterior walls being the curtain wall of the inner bailey. Today the Castle is owned and Managed by the Whittington Castle Preservation Fund. There is lots of history and heritage to explore at the Castle with the viewing mound being one of the oldest of it's type in England.
The Castle provides guided tours and lots of events throughout the year. Some examples of interactive history lessons/ events hosted in the past include: Medieval Day (re-enactment and demonstrations of medieval life), Viking History Event (Viking age crafts, skills and chance to dress up for children and adults.) The Black Star 1940's History (play traditional games, learn about rations and life on the home front. )
The Castle is also proud to be able to provide themed educational visits for school children catered to the National Curriculum in an interactive way to feed their minds and a love for history.
The grounds are home to wildlife - you can purchase food to feed the ducks and swans. If you visit during late spring time you might even get the joy of seeing the newest additions of ducklings and cygnets. As well as their parents Beatrice and Benedict.
There are lots of walks around the grounds or into the nearby village where you can cross a stream and children's play park. You can also enjoy a picnic in the grounds or visit the Kitchen tearoom with lots of sweet & savoury treats or treat yourself to afternoon tea."
