Accessibility:

There is no on-site parking and the closest car park is in Boroughbridge which is approximately 1 mile away. There are no blue badge parking spaces, however visitors with limited mobility may be able to park at the side of the road. Not all areas of the site are wheelchair-accessible, so it is advised to call ahead for more details on 01423 322768. There are handrails for visitors with low mobility and also benches on areas around the site. There are public toilets at the site. Assistance dogs are welcome.

 

Please note: Just beyond the site there is a sheer drop leading to an ancient quarry. The area is fenced off and sign posted but parents should keep children in sight at all times.

 

Brief Description:

Aldborough was considered the capital of the Roman Brigantes who were the largest tribe in Britain during those times. At this site you will find two roman mosaics still in their original positions and a museum containing roman artefacts. There is also a section of the original town wall. The grounds contain a Victorian Arboretum.

Directions:

From Harrogate via A6055. Follow Knaresborough Road/A59 North-eastbound for 2.5 miles.

Continue straight onto Boroughbridge Road/A6055 and follow for 6.2 miles. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Wetherby Road. Turn right. Continue onto Chapel Hill. Continue onto Front Street and your destination will be on the left.

 

From York via A59 and B6265. Follow A59 North-westbound for 8.3 miles. At the roundabout Turn right onto B6265 and follow for 7 miles. Turn right onto Front Street and your destination will be on the left.

There is a small shop at the site selling souvenirs and also serving snacks and refreshments. There are public houses, restaurants, bed-and-breakfast accommodation, shopping and a Tourist Information Centre in neighbouring Boroughbridge. Nearby York and Harrogate also have a wealth of attractions including museums, churches, hotels, bed-and-breakfast accommodation, bars and restaurants, with grocery stores and shopping centres.
