The entrance gate with a noticeboard on the left is off Low Road with one step up to the flagged stone path that leads straight to the church door and round the church. There is a noticeboard inside the grounds on the left of the path and a wooden seat just outside the entrance door. Some roadside parking is available near the church. There is also at the back of the church, a narrow back gate into the church from Front Street. Inside St Andrew's, the opening leads past a covered octagonal font to a reception area with five steps down to the nave, and the church is light and airy with a painted white ceiling, boxed pews with a step up from the central and side aisles and a step leading up to the chancel.

Brief description

Aldborough was once an important Roman garrison town and the Romans built a temple to the god Mercury which was later converted into a Saxon Christian church on the site where a Saxon building was erected in 1100AD or so. It was controlled by York Minster and was known as a peculiar. The Scots destroyed it around 1318AD but it was rebuilt around 1332 when Richard de Aldborough funded a chantry chapel. A chancel and west tower were built in the 1400s and incorporated Roman bricks. There is a small statue to Mercury set into the wall and a six-foot memorial brass to Sir William de Aldeburg in armour, a 16th century table, other notable furniture and a Georgian bread shelf. Of the remarkable stained glass windows, one nativity window shows shepherds with bagpipes.
