Brief description
"In 1934 Benthall Hall was to be knocked down however Mary Clementina who was a descendant of William Benthall bought the building and made it her mission to restore the family home. Mary moved from Devon with her husband to achieve this, however she returned to Devon during the Second World War. This was because she had rented the hall to an evacuated school. She supported the anti- aircraft sites by driving a canteen around Exmoor delivering refreshments to the men.
After the war Clementina returned to Benthall Hall and continued her kind acts to help others and in 1958 she carried out a beautiful kindness by gifting Benthall Hall to the National Trust. Sixty years on we are thankful to this lady for saving this Tudor manor/ family home of over 500 years and all the history that go along with it. Why not visit and see why she loved this beautiful home so much?"
