Accessibility:

There is a car park on site for a £3 charge and there are disability toilets at the Waiting Room and Pithead Baths (unisex) and adjacent to the Winder (single sex) but no toilets underground.
The whole site is accessible to some degree but there are steep and lengthy slopes at certain points, so assistance is strongly advised. Non-certified electrical items (including wheelchairs) cannot be used underground in the mine so it would be necessary to switch to a manual wheelchair for the underground tour.  Wheelchair access to the underground tour is limited to four wheelchair users at a time for safety reason related to emergency exit routes/procedures. Wheelchair users are advised to book in advance for the underground tour. Many areas include induction loops and textual information boards.

Assistance dogs are welcome on site but cannot be taken underground.

Brief Description:

Big Pit National Coal Museum is based in and around the site of a real coal mine. It includes many above ground attractions, including exhibitions and historical coal mining, exhibitions detailing the story of mining in Wales and you can watch the 'the winder' raising and lowering the cages into the mine. The underground tour is 90 metres below the surface and takes in original underground mine shafts and workings, where the visitors are equipped with similar tools that the miners would have used.
