Church of St Mary, South Cowton DL7 0JG
Details
Accessibility
The church is not in daily use but is open daily, well off the B1263, up a farm track and past the farmhouse. Parking is limited in the church grounds. A rough path leads to the tight entrance door with a step up onto a stone slab then a step down into the church. There are two steps down into the main part of the church and pews are separated by wood nailed into the floor which need to be stepped over from the main aisle. There are two steps to the choir stall area then also a step at the communion rail. The church is not particularly well lit. No toilets in church. Public toilets at Darlington, Richmond and Northallerton.
"Access to the church is along a path, through churchyard and through the small chancel door at the south-eastern end of the church. Access is tight through the door and there is one step down into the church."
Brief description
The church is a world heritage site and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It was probably built in 1460 partly for defence. It comprises a tower, nave, chancel, porch and vestry. It is Grade I listed, not in daily use but has an interesting history, and still retains much of the medieval interior with lovely wooden ceiling, seats, carvings, effigies and rood screen. There is a wooden helmet in the church and two-headed carving on one of the choir stalls. Some of the surnames on the coats of arms appear in Shakespeare's plays. There is a view of privately-owned Cowton Castle from the church.
