Accessibility:

There is no car park on site, however there is free parking available on the roadside. The shop and the grounds of the castle are wheelchair accessible. Only the ground floor of the Keep is wheelchair accessible because there is a steep, narrow, spiral staircase which is 4 storeys high. There is a unisex toilet on site and a separate wheelchair accessible toilet. No baby changing facilities are available.


Brief Description:

Brougham Castle was founded in the early 13th Century and was host to Edward I in 1300. Its remains sit in a picturesque setting next to the River Eamont. With its complex passages and spiral staircases is it a great place to explore. The grounds are a great spot for a picnic.

Directions:

From Penrith via A66 (3.3m). Head south-east on Little Dockray towards Corn Market/A592. Turn right onto Corn Market/A592. At the roundabout take the 1st exit onto Ullswater Road/A592. At Skirsgill Interchange take the 1st exit onto A66. At Kemplay Bank Roundabout take the 3rd exit and stay on A66. Turn right onto B6262. Turn right at Moor Lane.


From Appleby-in-Westmoreland via A66 (11.7m). Head east on 68/Bridge Street/B6260 towards The Sands/B6542. Turn left onto 68/The Sands/B6542. Slight left onto Appleby Bypass/A66 and continue for 10.5 miles. Turn left towards Brougham Bridge. Continue onto Brougham Bridge.

There is a shop on site which serves snacks and hot and cold drinks. The area surrounding the castle is relatively remote. However there are bars, restaurants, hotels and bed-and-breakfast accommodation in nearby Penrith along with shopping and a wealth of other attractions.
