Brief Description:
Finchdale Priory is also know as Finchdale Abbey. It was founded in 1196 on the site of the hermit dwelling of St Godric. St Godric was a retired sailor and merchant who settled there after a life of travel. It was also used as a holiday retreat for the monks of Durham. Its remains now sit there on the banks of the River Wear and there is now a caravan park on site.
