Accessibility:

In Whitby there are a number of visitor attractions that are accessible for wheelchair users. These include the Whitby Abbey and Visitor Centre (up on a hill east of, and overlooking, the town; see its venue listing on this website), Whitby Museum and Art Gallery, and Whitby Leisure Centre (both on the hill west of the town), and in the flat harbour area, the Lifeboat Museum, and the Captain Cook Museum. A number of restaurants are also accessible. Accessible toilets available with a RADAR key include Abbey Plain, Khyber Pass, Marina Car Park, New Quay Road, West Cliff and the Bus Station. RADAR keys are available from the Tourist Information Centre on Langbourne Road (opposite the Railway Station).

Brief Description:

Whitby is a seaside town in North Yorkshire. It is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey. Its fishing port was developed in the Middle Ages and was one of the areas where Captain Cook learned his seamanship. Whitby is served by a Fire and Rescue Service, a Police Station and an RNLI Lifeboat Station.

Directions:

From the north, take the A171 from Middlesbrough via Guisborough, leads over the moors past Lockwood Beck and Scaling Dam Resevoir (nearby petrol station).

 

From the south, via Scarborough, the A171 runs to Whitby over the moors via Burniston, and Cloughton, through Hawsker, and then access into the town is by either the New Bridge or the Swing Bridge.

 

From the M1, take the A64 in the direction of York. Keeping on the A64, travel to Malton, then take the A169 over the North Yorkshire Moors via Pickering (petrol station), passing through Sleights. This road will lead to a roundabout, turn right onto the A171 and into Whitby.

Whitby is served by the Yorkshire Coastliner bus line, operating from Leeds, Tadcaster, York, Scarborough, Bridlington, Pickering and  Malton. It is also served by Whitby rail station.
