Accessibility

Easby Abbey, part of English Heritage, is wheelchair accessible from the car park at Richmond station where there are a lovely independent cafe, art gallery, railway heritage centre and three small cinemas. This is a lovely walk of a mile or so which crosses the River Swale and leads to the lower entrance to Easby Abbey. Please note that this part of the walk is fairly flat and wide though it narrows slightly nearer the Abbey and the path through the Abbey is on a slight slope. Turn sharp left to access the car park. The Abbey is also accessible from the B6271, Maison Dieu, from Richmond. The paths through the Abbey are not all wheelchair accessible and may be rough in parts. Care should be taken.

Brief description

According to English Heritage, the site on which the abbey lies was listed in the Domesday Book as Asebi and was held by Murdac, a vassal of the Earl of Richmond. A religious order probably existed here some time before the abbey was founded. Easby Abbey is one of the best examples of monasteries of the Premonstratensian order, from France, and was founded in 1152AD by Roald, Constable of Richmond. After its suppression in 1536 the buildings lapsed into ruin. The ruined buildings are now surrounded by grassland which may not be uniformly even.  The artist J M W Turner painted the ruins.
