Brief description

St Agatha's is medieval and houses many treasures, including 13th century wall paintings which rank among the best in England. They were covered with layers of whitewash during the Reformation and discovered only during the 19th century. At the south wall is a triple sedilia, affording seating for the clergy, and each seat is decorated on the back with the likeness of a bishop. These paintings are not frescoes but seccoes, where the paint is applied dry. Entrance is through the south porch which has a parvise or priest's chamber above the vault of the entrance. Just inside the entrance is a carved holy water stoup with a ledge which was used as seating for the infirm. The nave houses a replica of the 8th century Celtic Easby Cross (the original being in the V&A Museum in London), one of the finest pieces of Anglo Saxon sculpture in England. In one corner is a damaged statue of St Agatha.
