Brief description

"Admission to the museum is free and there is no need to book. We are run entirely by volunteers and receive no regular financial support. All donations are much appreciated.

The museum is located in Frome, a small, but quickly growing, town at the far eastern edge of the county of Somerset, dating back to at least 685AD.

The surrounding hills dip gently down to the River Frome at the centre of the town, with one of only two river bridges in England (the other is in Bath) which has shops along its length.

Frome Museum, close to the bridge, is independently run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. We do not receive any regular sources of external income and although entry to the Museum is free we rely almost entirely on donations.

Our origins lie in the 1956 Frome Historical Exhibition which led to the formation of the Frome Society in 1958. Today we are the proud owners of the iconic “Frome Literary and Scientific Institution” building which opened in 1869.

The museum’s two exhibition galleries are a treasure trove of information and objects. The first gallery houses a permanent collection, while the second displays our temporary exhibitions. We also have a wonderful library containing a large number of historic documents and maps relating to Frome and the surrounding villages.

The museum is always changing as we investigate new ways of telling our story and explaining our heritage. Our vision is to explore, understand and share the rich heritage of the area with visitors, researchers and the wider community."
