Brief description

"Promenade in the footsteps of early spa visitors as you view exciting exhibitions in the Mercer Art Gallery, from Harrogate’s Fine Art Collection to new shows of contemporary art.

Built 200 years ago as the Promenade Rooms, this magnificent building was a place for spa visitors to socialise. It later became a theatre, then Town Hall, before its rebirth as the Mercer Art Gallery in 1991.

You will find a wide range of ever-changing exhibitions, perhaps a national touring show of painting, photography, sculpture and crafts, or an exhibition drawn from the Harrogate District Fine Art Collection, and contemporary work by regional artists.

Entry is free!"

"The Mercer Art Gallery is one of Yorkshire's most exciting galleries. You never know quite what to expect when you come through the door... great Victorian paintings from the Harrogate collection by famous names such as Atkinson Grimshaw and William Powell Frith. The joy and diversity of the Harrogate Open exhibition, when everybody joins in and submits paintings, sculpture, photographs, prints, drawings, textiles and more...or challenging new work presented to Harrogate by the Contemporary Art Society."

Transport

"The gallery is a leisurely 10 minute walk from the railway and bus terminals through the town centre. Cross the road from the terminals and head straight through the centre towards the war memorial. Walk down Parliament Street and at the traffic lights cross straight over and turn left. You will pass the tourist information centre on the left. Continue past Hales Bar and turn right into Swan Road. The gallery is 100 yards on the right, opposite the Studley Hotel."

Amenities

"The Mercer Art Gallery shop is not only part of the visitor experience and a vital support to the gallery, but is now fast becoming a Destination Store to find inspiring pieces of jewellery, prints and giftware thanks to investment to expand the shop.

The entrance area has had a makeover with a sleek new reception desk and bespoke craftsman-made retail units that have enabled us to increase the size of the gallery shop. Now we can stock more of the sorts of things that people like to find there – greetings cards, artist-made jewellery, prints and ceramics, and unusual gift items. The simple, modular units have been specially made for the Mercer by Yorkshire-based Plaey Workshop whose other clients include The Hepworth Wakefield and Tate St Ives. Plaey work with sustainable birch plywood sourced from a source in Poland and  Valchoramat which is made from 100% recyclable plant fibre."
