Accessibility

The church is located up a hill, on a rise at the top of the high street. There are entrances up several stone steps leading up to the church grounds and building from both Birdgate and Smiddy Hill. In addition, there is an alleyway without steps beside number 25 Hall Garth leading to the church, though Hall Garth itself is on a fairly steep hill. All steps and paths in the church grounds have iron handrails on one side. A semi-circular series of seven steps leads from the paved stone path to the main entrance door, then a flat area then three more steps leads up to the door. Nearby is a notice about ramp access available marked with a directional arrow.  There are two steps up to the choir area, a short walk then one step up to the communion rail in front of the altar. There are three main aisles inside the church, a central aisle and one aisle on each side of the central aisle. Pews are not raised from the ground and have kneelers. St Peter and Paul's is well lit.

"Access to the church can be from the top of the Market Place, from Birdgate and Hallgarth.

The path from Hallgarth is the only one without steps.  (YO18 7AW)

Once you get to the church steps you can go to the right and follow the path which will lead you to a slope for wheelchair etc. access into the South transept of the church.

Unfortunately we don't have a car park or any dedicated parking spaces.  Hallgarth (the road) does have free parking bays down the one side, however they are very popular!"

Brief description

The church is famous for its 15th century wall paintings which are among the best surviving medieval murals in the country. An early church building was rebuilt on the site in about 1140 AD. The bowl of the font is a survivor from the earliest Saxon times and is supported by a new base. There are many items of interest in the church, including an effigy of Sir Willliam Bruce, a marble tomb, a pulpit in the style of Hepplewhite dated 18th century and a 14th century sedilia in the sanctuary.
