Brief description

"Father Edward Bryan, who converted from the Anglican church to the Roman Catholic church, founded St Joseph's Academy in 1901. St Joseph's church was completed in 1911 and the portable altar stone of Father Nicholas Postgate, martyred in 1679, who inspired Father Bryan, hangs at the front of the altar. The church was not consecrated till 2011. There is a statue of Father Postgate at the back of the church, depicting him as he set out with his staff on his travels across the moors to isolated communities in the seventeenth century. The church houses a hand-painted copy of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and a mosaic by a well-known local artist, Audrey Murty."
