Accessibility:

Due to the castle being situated in the middle of a dry moat, the site is not wheelchair accessible. Although it can be viewed from a distance. A staircase has been built leading across the dry moat to the top of the ruin. Parking here is free. It has disability access and toilets, and facilities for people with hearing and visual impairments.


Brief Description:

Sandal Castle was originally built as an earth and timber structure around 1106. It was later rebuilt in stone at the end of the 12th century. By 1642 the castle was in a state of disrepair and is now a ruin site, with stone walls on the mound of its motte and bailey layout.

Directions:

Situated 5.1 miles west of Foulby. Head north/west on Doncaster Road, for approximately 3 miles. Use right hand lane to turn left onto Oakenshaw Lane. After 1 mile turn right onto Walton Lane and continue onto Castle Road. Turn left onto Manygates Lane. The castle will be on your right hand side. Free limited parking is available on site

Sandal & Agbrigg is the closest station to the castle. Bus services operate in and around the area, with stops located along the A61/Barnsley Road.

The venue has a picnic site, and also a cafe providing light refreshments on site, and other closest amenities can be found at the Castle Pub, situated along the A61/Barnsley Road. There are toilets with nappy changing facilities, and an education/study area. Dogs are allowed at this venue. Coach parties are accepted.
