Brief description

The history of St Alkmund's Church of England (C. of E.), Shrewsbury, dates back over 1100 years. It was founded  in the year 912 a.d. by  the 'Lady of the Marches', Princess Aethelfleda, who was the eldest daughter of King Alfred.  Aethelfleda dedicated the church to her ancestor, St. Alkmund, who was a Northumbrian Prince.

St. Alkmund's present-day building is largely Georgian ( built 1795) with the exception of the church tower which dates back to the 15th Century. Grade II - listed,  The church has had extensive restoration work in the last 200 years, thanks to a number of large and small benefactors,  including  'English Heritage', the 'Georgian Society' and others.

St. Alkmund's nowadays is partnered with neighbouring St. Chad's C.of E. Church, Shrewsbury, and St Mary the Virgin's C. of E. Church, Shrewsbury with whom it shares  the same Pastor.

St Alkmund's hosts regular lunchtime musical recitals and concerts,  to which visitors are welcome. It has a fine, church organ, which was given to St. Alkmund's in 1996 on semi-permanent loan by the Royal College of Church Music.
