Accessibility:

Access to the site is via a metalled road as far as a small car park. After this there is a rough track that is, at best, only suitable to 4x4 vehicles.  The terrain is rough and rocky. There is also a 4" threshold to negotiate once you reach the church entrance.

Brief Description:

Llangelynnin Church is an exceptionally remote and ancient church and is dedicated to Saint Celynin, a 6th century saint who possibly established the first religious settlement on the site. The nave dates from around the 12th or 13th century with the chancel being added around the 14th century. The site is likely to have replaced an earlier church constructed of wood or wattle and daub.

There is a 15th century porch and a 'squint window' in its east wall. The door hinges and threshold date from the 14th century, with the door being a more recent addition. There is a 'men's chapel' which even today remains unpaved. Two theories exist as to why these chapels were created; firstly, so that the men could stand or kneel in an area separated from the women or secondly, that the general congregation wished to keep travelling drovers and the potential diseases they may harbour at a distance!

Major renovations of the church were carried out in 1932 and in 1987.

There is a stone wall around the perimeter of the churchyard with a gated entrance along its eastern edge. It contains a number of graves dating back to the 14th century, which, due to the outcropping of the rocks, have been forced to be laid at almost random angles.

It also contains "The Holy Well of St. Celynin", which is now open but used to be roofed and likely predates the church. The well, it was believed, had the power to cure sick children.
