Brief description

"St John the Baptist Church and Ruins," is a Grade II listed building dating from the early 12th century (Norman). The Chancel Arch, walls, corbels, and the North and South windows date from this period.

In 1791 Bishop Hon. Shute Barrington restored the church in the Gothic style, adding the apse and brick turret.

In 1888, John Morris and Spencer Slingsby Stallwood restored the Chancel adding Neo-Norman decoration to the Arch.

In the early 20th century, further restoration was carried out on the Chancel, at this time the Font and several monuments were moved inside the Chancel.

One such monument is that of John Saunders, lying in a reclining position wearing a turban and reading a book.

The Church was declared redundant in 1981.
