Accessibility:

Parking: There are disability parking bays located close to the church in Mark Lane.

Due to the age of the building there is limited access to some areas.  The approach is via stone steps that lead to a flagstone pathway. Please be aware that the approach can be slippery in wet weather.

Disability/pushchair access is via an entrance in Merrion Gardens.

Interior - there is level access around the interior.  There is a small step up to the Communion Table, this is a restricted area to the public.  Some of the flooring is worn and uneven in area.

Brief description:

St. John the Evangelist Church is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It is a Grade I listed building and is the oldest church in Leeds.  Built between 1632-34 and paid for by its founder John Harrison, a wealthy merchant and royalist supporter of Charles I.  The church is renowned for its highly decorative Jacobean ceiling, pews and screen with carved wood decorations.

The church is a 10 minute walk from the Tourist Centre via Headrow and New Briggate.

Opening Times:

Worship: The church is a redundant Anglican Church, please check with the venue's website for hours of worship and any additional events and celebrations. 

Visiting: Open Friday & Saturday from 11am-1pm. Please note these are subject to change due to staffing, please refer to the venue's website.
