St Mary's Church, Staindrop, County Durham
Details
Accessibility
Staindrop is about equidistant from Barnard Castle and Darlington and is on the bus route between these two towns. St Mary's is on the main street and is accessed through double iron gates, up a flagstone path which leads directly into the church with no steps. There is, however, pipework on the floor surrounding one of the raised boxed pews so care needs to be taken here. The aisles are flat and tiled. The church is fairly dark.
Brief description
Settlements at Staindrop date back to neolithic times but St Mary's, formerly St Gregory's, dates to the reign of King Ahlred 771AD. It houses many interesting old artefacts including a very early sundial built into the wall above the chancel. Through marriage into the rich and powerful Neville family, the church became an influential centre in Durham. However, the family fortunes waned but nearby Raby Castle was bought by the Vane family who restored the altar in 1626 with the current table. The link between the church and the lords of Raby is continued to this day.
