Details
Accessibility:
There is no official parking near to the church. The entrance to the track that leads to the church is on a narrow lane and the two gate entrances close to that spot are for private dwellings. The gate from the road is a five bar gate secured by twine that leads to a wide but mossy/grassy and damp track. There are two stone steps leading up into the churchyard through a double wrought iron gate, a flat, concrete path leading to the church front door and two steps down over a metal grate to get into the church itself.
The nave is laid to flagstones and is flat and level, but the pews are on wooden plinths raised around three inches off the floor.
Brief Description:
The Grade II listed, redundant St Odoceus' Church is in a tiny hamlet near to Laugharne, hidden away down a track and is under the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches.
Some of the the sandstone building (the chancel in particular) dates from as early as the 14th century but by the early 2000s was described as in a state dereliction. A local friends group has, since 2006, been in the process or renovation and reconstruction.
There is a four-bay nave without aisles, a three-bay chancel and squat tower.
Inside you will find a 14th-century effigy of (possibly) Margaret Marlos that has been broken into three pieces to signify her being cut into three pieces by robbers. There is also an early Christian stone slab carved with Ogham and Roman inscriptions and an intricately carved oak altar.
