Brief Description:
Swiss Valley is a residential village on the outskirts of Llanelli in the county of Carmarthenshire. It connects Felinfoel to the South and Llannon to the North.
"The history of Swiss Valley, Llanelli is primarily defined by the construction of two reservoirs, the Lower Lliedi reservoir in 1878 and the Upper Lliedi reservoir in 1905, to provide a safe water supply for the growing town. These reservoirs are situated in the valley of the River Lliedi and now form a popular recreational area. The area's past also includes industrial influence, with a lake connected to the now-closed Llanelli Steelworks.
- The Lower Lliedi Reservoir was built first in 1878 to meet the water needs of the growing Llanelli population.
- The Upper Lliedi Reservoir was added in 1905 to handle the increasing demand for water.
- The reservoirs were created by flooding a well-wooded valley, and the area is now known for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities.
- An area within the park was historically connected to the Llanelli Steelworks, which closed in 1981.
- A large lake in the park, once part of the steelworks, is now a home for waterbirds.
- The history of industry and water management is being highlighted with new interpretive panels at the leisure park, as noted by Llanelli Community Heritage.
- The area is now a popular destination for recreation, including walking, wildlife watching, and cycling, as seen along the Swiss Valley Cycle Route.
- It provides public access to the countryside and valuable habitats for wildlife."
