"Wheelchair and Mobility Aided Visitors:

The Centre is accessible for wheelchair users with a call button that is located to the left as you are about to enter the second set of doors to enable staff to assist visitors with entering the building.

The Centre is an historic building and as three floors with stairs however, for wheelchair or mobility assisted visitors the Centre has a ramp to allow access to the ground floor exhibition area. For access to the first floor exhibition area and the second floor research room are available by the lift, please note it is intended for use only by one occupied wheelchair with their carer at a time. The Exchange tea room situated on the ground floor has been designed to be spacious for wheelchair users.

Due to reasons of fire safety and staff availability the Centre can only allow two wheelchair assisted visitors on the first and second floor at any one time. The Centre allows guide assistance dogs to assist with visitors access to the building.

Toilet Facilities:

The toilets are situated on the ground floor next to the Exchange Tea Room, and the Centre also has a wheelchair accessible toilet with a call alarm installed.

The toilet facilities provided are intended for use by staff and visitors to the tea room or Heritage Centre only as public toilet amenities are situated in Roseway Car Park."

"The Centre is open every Tuesday and Saturday 10am to 4pm. The last admission is at 3pm. Admission is £3 for non-members of the Association and Free Entry for members. To find out more information about becoming a member please visit the membership page.

Please note Covid Secure measures are in place, so please respect all members of staff during your visit by wearing a face covering, keeping your distance and sanitising your hands.

The Telephone Exchange Tearoom has now re-opened every Tuesday and Saturday 10am to 3pm.

The ground floor includes an industrial exhibition space with displays of Gainsborough made products and machinery from local firms such as Marshall’s, Roses, Sandars, and Edlington’s as well as much more relating to Gainsborough's local industrial heritage. The Centre's shop and welcome desk, as well as the Exchange Tea Room, toilets and disabled lift, are also situated on the ground floor.

The first floor showcases the Centre’s twentieth-century themed street including former shops from Gainsborough’s past and features a post office and house with a backyard scene as well as the Centre's changing exhibition room. Check regularly the What's On page to keep updated regarding the changing exhibitions.

The Centre’s second floor houses the archive library that includes a wealth of information and resources, from newspaper articles to an ever growing photographic archive and extensive oral history archive. The Second floor also houses the archive department and this is not available for public access.

The Centre has a dedicated team of volunteers who assist visitors with their visit, whether welcoming them to the Centre, working as a guide to the exhibitions or helping visitors with their research requests. The Centre highly recommends allowing a minimum of three hours for your visit.

Group Visits

If you are a group that wishes to arrange a visit to the Heritage Centre then, by special arrangement, the Centre will be opened for a weekday or evening session. Please let us know an estimate of group numbers for a group visit so the Centre can ensure the provision of staff to ensure safety requirements. Gainsborough Heritage Centre is located in the Old Post Office at 12 North Street, Gainsborough, DN21 2HS and situated on the corner of North Street and Spital Terrace, almost opposite the Gainsborough Methodist Church and KFC.

Car parking

There is a large pay and display car park in North Street immediately behind Gainsborough Heritage Centre and another in Roseway across the road from the Centre behind the Methodist Church.
