"As the Visitor Centre is on the site of the No. 1 Communal Site of RAF Woodhall Spa, many of the buildings are original and all are at ground level.  You should allow 2-3 hours for your visit. There are wheelchairs and a walking frame available without charge.  You can enjoy our café and shop selling an excellent range of souvenirs and books. These all have step-free access.

Members are on hand throughout Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre should you require assistance.

Brief description

"Home of the 97, 619, 617 (Dambusters) and 627 Squadron that flew out of RAF Woodhall Spa in the 1940s

Civilian life in Lincolnshire in the 1940s, Women's Land Army, Home Guard, Prisoner of War. The Arnhem Story,
Aircraft Models throughout the ages. As well as a section on the Cold War, WW1 Royal Flying Corps in Lincolnshire. Cinema Room showing the history of WW1 Aircraft and Airships.

The Centre was formerly part of No.1 Communal Site, RAF Woodhall Spa, and was built in 1940, with a planned life span of only 10 years! The site included the Officers and Sergeants Mess, Airmen's Dining Halls and the NAAFI building, together with Ration Store, Latrines and Ablution Block. Only the Airmen's Dining Halls, the NAAFI, Ablution Block and Ration Store are within the Centre's boundary.The Thorpe Camp Preservation Group established the Visitor Centre in 1988 to commemorate those Airmen who flew from the airfield in World War II. 97, 619, 617 (Dambusters) and 627 Squadrons were based at RAF Woodhall Spa."

Directions

There is a bus stop serving both directions about 300yds/366m from the Camp entrance.  There is a pavement on one side of the road only and this is quite narrow with some grass verges. Brylaine Travel (Tel No. 01205 364087) run bus service No 5 from Lincoln to Boston and return (Ask for Thorpe Camp) which passes the entrance. They are approximately every hour and have wheelchair access.
