Description:

The town is less than a mile from the English border, and near the Offa's Dyke Path. It is named after the Norman knight, Roger de Montgomerie, who was given the land after the 1066 Battle of Hastings. He erected a motte-and-bailey timber and earthwork Castle at Hendomen (please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hen_Domen) one mile to the north of the present town, where a stone hilltop castle was built in the 13th century. Having been the county town, (now the county's administrative headquarters are at Welshpool), it has attractive half-timbered, Georgian and Victorian buildings, and its population now is only around 1300 people.
