"Tudor House Museum is a Grade II* Listed building with all the steps, stairs and quirks that that entails. We have made adaptations to help you enjoy your visit where possible. If you have any suggestions as to how we can do more, please contact us.

Arrival: Friar Street is generally level and is part-pedestrianised, but the pavement outside the museum has a kerb. The nearest car park with disabled spaces is the Cathedral multi-storey pay-and-display. Spaces directly outside the museum are for 45 minutes only and cannot be reserved.

The Museum: there is a level entrance into the corridor and courtyard with a ramp to allow access into the Coffee Shop. The tavern and Victorian kitchen are level. There are chairs available in all the rooms. There is no lift to the first floor.

Alternative Visit Box: for those who can’t manage the stairs, we provide a visitor folder which gives information about all the Tudor Rooms. We will happily put this out in the Coffee Shop for you and provide a free tea/coffee to accompany it.

Other Measures: We have magnifying viewers for visitors to use upon request. The lighting is usually bright but a torch is available if necessary. We welcome assistance dogs and can provide water for them.

Toilet: there is a large, unisex, accessible toilet on the courtyard with vertical and horizontal handrails. The floor is made of slip-resistant tiles and the hot water is sensor-activated.

Coffee Shop: we provide gluten-free crumpets and oat milk, available on request. Please note that we cannot guarantee that the cakes have been made in a nut-free environment. If you have a particular food intolerance or allergy, please contact us in advance of your visit.

If you, or someone you know, are on the autism spectrum or have a sensory and communication disorder, you might be interested in visiting during our ‘Quiet Mornings’. This will be the first Friday of every month, 10am to 12pm.

Brief description

"The former Museum of Local Life in Worcester was located at 38-42 Friar Street and was rebranded as the Tudor House Museum in 2004. Situated in a 16th-century timber-framed building, it showcases local history, including trade, daily life, and the building's, with exhibits maintained by Museums Worcestershire.

Location: 38-42 Friar Street, Worcester, WR1 2NA.

Rebranding: Changed from Museum of Local Life to Tudor House Museum to emphasize the building's historic architecture.

Significance: Features, including the interior, often represent the city's past, and some collections from that era may be found in the museum store at Hartlebury.

Features: The site is known for its original, uneven floors and narrow staircases, reflecting its age.

The museum remains a key heritage site in the city centre, often highlighting the social history of the area."

"Welcome to Tudor House, a small but perfectly formed independent museum, set in a fine example of a close-studded timber framed building with the only remaining original embossed ceiling in Worcester.

Originally the Museum of Local Life (as well as many other things over the centuries), the building became Tudor House Museum in 2004 when the Worcester Heritage and Amenity Trust’s small band of volunteers took on the heroic task of running it themselves with no local or national government funding, and precious little else other than a kettle and hope!

Since those early days they have grown the museum to become a professionally Accredited museum, a shortlistee for the national Family Friendly Museum, with an award-winning volunteer team and big plans for the future.

In 2008 Worcester Municipal Charities took up the lease for the building from Worcester City Council on behalf of Worcester Heritage & Amenity Trust (WHAT) allowing Tudor House a secure foundation on which to grow. Worcester Municipal Charities has agreed a 999 year lease with the council, securing the future for Tudor House Museum.  Take a look at our Projects page for more information.

WHAT is a registered charity (1103730) and a limited company.

Why not become an an invaluable part of Tudor House’s history by joining in our Events, by volunteering or by Supporting Us? There are lots of different ways to make a difference to the museum."

"Coffee Shop & Gifts:

The Coffee Shop (as it was known during Cadbury ownership in the 1900s) is an excellent place to stop and recharge after your visit! We serve a range of teas, coffees and soft drinks, with light lunches, toasted teacakes, scones and cakes to tempt you. All served on vintage china.

Our tea cosies are famous throughout the city! Hand-knitted by volunteers in quirky and original designs, they are the perfect gift. We also stock souvenirs, pocket money toys, books and postcards.

Family Visits:

Tudor House is perfect for a family visit with dressing up and games for children to play throughout the year. The newly relaunched Tudor House Rat trail guides younger visitors through the museum with plenty of fun activities for just £2 – ask at entry for more information. We also have a free under fives, Tudor Rat hide and seek activity for very little ones; count all the knitted rats you spot around the museum and remember to collect your rat sticker when you leave the museum!

There are high chairs, buggy parking and baby changing facilities on-site. We can heat up baby formula or food on request. Breast and bottle feeding are welcomed anywhere in the museum or the courtyard.

Craft and activity packs are available during school holidays, and we run a series of family friendly events throughout the year. Please view our events page for more information."
