Brief description

Set on the banks of the River Severn, Worcester Cathedral is one of England’s most atmospheric cathedrals, offering space to explore, pause, and take in nearly a thousand years of history.

Built between 1084 and 1504, the cathedral brings together many centuries of English architecture in one place. As you move through the building, you can see how styles change over time — from the solid Norman stonework of the crypt to the lighter, more elegant Gothic arches and the beautifully balanced central tower above.

There are several highlights not to miss. The Norman crypt beneath the High Altar is one of the finest in the country, calm and quietly impressive. The Chapter House is unique in England, and the cathedral’s woodwork, carvings, and architectural details reward a slow wander rather than a hurried visit.

The cathedral is also closely linked to national history. King John — best known for the Magna Carta — is buried here, his tomb placed prominently before the High Altar. It’s a powerful reminder that this is not just a beautiful building, but a place where England’s story has unfolded.

Still a living place of worship, Worcester Cathedral welcomes visitors throughout the week. Whether you arrive during a riverside walk, explore as part of a day in the city, or simply step inside for a moment of quiet, it offers a sense of scale, calm, and continuity that stays with you long after you leave.

2026: "Worcester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of Christ and Blessed Mary the Virgin, is a Church of England cathedral in Worcester, England. The cathedral is the seat of the bishop of Worcester and is the mother church of the diocese of Worcester; it is administered by its dean and chapter. The cathedral is a grade I listed building and part of a scheduled monument.[1][2]
The cathedral was founded in 680. The earliest surviving fabric dates from 1084, when the cathedral was rebuilt in the Romanesque style by Bishop later Saint Wulfstan. The chapter house dates from 1120, and the nave was extended in the 1170s. It became a place of pilgrimage with the shrines of St Wulfstan and St Oswald. Between 1224 and 1269 the east end was rebuilt in the Early English Gothic style. The remainder of the nave was rebuilt in the 1360s, and the "exquisite" central tower completed in 1374.[3] The cathedral retains a set of medieval misericords, now set into Victorian choir stalls; the cathedral was heavily restored in the nineteenth century, and contains a set of furnishings by George Gilbert Scott. It contains several funerary monuments, including those of King JohnArthur, Prince of Wales; and the prime minister Stanley Baldwin."

The Cathedral is located in Worcester City Centre. We are a 10-15 minute walk from Worcester Foregate Street and Shrub Hill Train Stations and Crowngate Street Bus Station.

We are a short 20 minute car journey from Junctions 6 and 7 of the M5 motorway.

Cycling:

We are proud to be a cycle-friendly Cathedral and our brand new bicycle racks are situated to the left of the main visitor entrance in College Yard and to the rear of the Cathedral on College Green. Route 46 of the National Cycle Network runs through Worcester - find out more about the route here.

Parking

We are sorry that due to limited space, parking in College Yard is restricted to pass holders only.

There are disabled parking spaces which are for use by Blue Badge holders on a first come first served basis.

However, there are several public car parks within easy walking distance of the Cathedral.

We would recommend parking opposite the Cathedral, in Cathedral Square where there is a pay and display NCP multi-storey car park. Alternatively, Copenhagen Street car park is located to the West of the Cathedral off Deansway, and to the East, King Street car park, off Edgar Street, all within a 5 minute walk of the main visitor entrance.

Shopmobility Worcester hires scooters and electric wheelchairs from Crowngate Shopping Centre Parking which is ten minutes away.
