Brief Description:

St Paul’s Church and Monastery was built in 685 AD. In 866 it was destroyed by the Danes and remained semi derelict for over 200 years. In 1070 the army of William the Conqueror further destroyed it and set it on fire. It was repaired in 1074. The church was rebuilt in the 19th Century and the ruins of the original church are still at the site. Inside the church is the original dedication stone which is the oldest in England. When the foundations for the rebuild took place they unearthed a stone Saxon cross (the Jarrow Cross), which is now on display in the church. There is a stained glass window representing the Jarrow Cross which was unveiled by Diana, Princess of Wales in 1985.
