Brief description

"Whittingham Hospital was a psychiatric hospital in the parish of Whittingham, near Preston, Lancashire, England. The hospital opened in 1873 as the Fourth Lancashire County Asylum and grew to be the largest mental hospital in Britain, and pioneered the use of electroencephalograms (EEGs). It closed in 1995."

"The imposing North Lodge in Whittingham was put on the market in 2023 with no guide price but was later marketed by Ben Rose for offers over £249,950. Plans submitted by Chorley-based BARE Capital Ltd, which have now been approved by Preston City Council, include a 96 square metre extension to create an open plan living and dining area and a large master bedroom with en suite."

"The distinctive former gatehouse has been left disused and decaying since the institution – which opened in 1873 – finally closed more than a century later in 1995.   The site has since been largely cleared and is now occupied by new housing and the NHS Guild Park unit, which has been delivering mental health services for more than 25 years."
