Accessibility:

The closest car park is Marygate, alternatively there is a park-and-ride service available on the outskirts of the city. The main entrance has steps into it, however there is an alternative entrance for wheelchair users. As Barley Hall is a medieval building it has uneven floors and narrow steps and staircases. There are no lifts available which means that wheelchair users are restricted to the ground floor. They will require staff assistance to put down the temporary ramps between rooms. As the stairs to the upper floor are steep it may not be suitable for people with limited mobility. There are no accessible toilets or baby- changing facilities. Assistance dogs are welcome.

Brief Description:

Barley Hall was built in the 14th Century with an extra wing added in the 15th Century. It was built as the townhouse to Nostrell Priory near Wakefield. And then became home to prevalent citizens of York including the Lord Mayor of York. It then became hidden behind the façade of an office block which became derelict and was rediscovered when they were about to demolish the office block. The building was restored to how it would have looked in the 15th Century and then opened as a museum in 1993.
