Accessibility:

There is parking on the George Street side of the bar, which is permit parking only, but parking is allowed for 10 minutes. There is a pay-and-display car park in Peel Street next to St George' Church. There is level access through the gate, however there are steps up to the walls which are not wheelchair accessible. The closest public toilet is at the St George’s Field car park which includes wheelchair accessible facililties (access via RADAR key).


Brief Description:

Fishergate bar is one of five medieval gateways into the city of York. The first reference to the Bar was in 1315, and there is an inscription on the Bar stating that some of the wall were built in 1487 under Sir William Tod. In 1489, during the Yorkshire Rebellion again Henry VII’s taxes, the gates of the bar were burned. It eventually reopened in 1834. The English Highwayman Dick Turpin’s Grave is a two minute walk away in the graveyard opposite St George’s Church.

From Fulford via A19. Head north on Fulfordgate towards Heslington Lane. Turn left onto Heslington Lane. Turn right onto Main Street/A19. Continue onto Fishergate. Turn right onto Paragon Street/A1036. Continue straight to stay on Paragon Street/A1036. Turn left onto George Street.


From Rawcliffe via A19. Take Howard Drive to Shipton Road/A19. Continue on A19. Take A1036 to George Street in York for 3.1 miles. Turn left onto George Street.
