Accessibility:
Cars with a disability blue badge can park for up to 3 hours on the road outside the main entrance to the museum. The nearest car park is the Castle car park, next to Clifford’s Tower, which has 305 spaces, including 12 disability parking spaces.
The ground floors of both buildings are wheelchair accessible, but the upper floors of the left hand building are not, and although there is a lift to the upper floors of the right-hand side North building (the former debtors prison building), only 2 wheelchair users are allowed to use them at a time due to the Museum’s fire evacuation requirements. Visitors unable to access the upper floors are eligible for an Access ticket at a reduced cost (please see below). A manual wheelchair for visitors is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
On the venue’s website a Word document can be downloaded giving full accessibility information. There is a disability toilet with baby-changing facilities.
There is not a Loop hearing system, and some of the rooms have low levels of lighting, as our photographs show.
Brief Description:
The Castle Museum occupies 2 large buildings either side of its modern entrance, and also the small Raindale Mill building and small garden area behind and to the South of them, overlooking the Foss stretch of water.
In one large building are period rooms and the recreated Victorian Street, and in the other large building, the former debtors prison building, are displays on the World War I, the 1960s and on York Castle Prison.
The Museum's 2017 leaflet can be downloaded from its website at https://www.yorkcastlemuseum.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2017/03/YMT-York-Castle-Museum-Main-Leaflet-2017.compressed.pdf
Pushchairs cannot be taken into the Museum's galleries. A buggy park and a choice of baby carriers are available to borrow free of charge.
