Brief Description:
The remains of Monk Bretton priory is situated on the edge of Barnsley. It was a Cluniac monastery which was founded in the 12th Century. What remains today is most of the west range and the 15th Century gatehouse. It was founded as a daughter house to St Johns in Pontefract, but due to arguments between the two houses Monk Bretton became a Benedictine House in 1281. It closed as a Monastery during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538. In 1589 the Earl of Shrewsbury bought the estate and the west range was converted into a country house. It then changed hands several times until it was placed under state guardianship in 1932.
