Brief Description:
St Mary’s Church has great architectural interest due to the fact that it took 400 years of building between 1120 and 1530. It was also completely restored between 1844 and 1876. It is a Grade I Listed building. It is best known for its carved pillars, one of them is of a rabbit dressed as a pilgrim, which is thought to be the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s White Rabbit in the Alice in Wonderland story. There is also a beautifully painted ceiling in the vestry which is said to represent a map of the heavens.
