 Accessibility:

There is a car park about 150 yards away from the castle site but without blue badge parking either in the car park or on nearby roadsides. Access to the castle is on sloping land reached by steps. The only toilets on site are reached by a number of steps. There are no disability accessible toilets on site. The site also does not have baby changing room facilities. Wheelchair access is very restricted and the paying entrance is only reachable by climbing over 20 steps.

Brief Description:

This 11th century castle belonged to Viking King Magnus Barefoot after originally being a Christian place of worship. The Castle has panoramic views of Peel and the sea with its grounds covered in thick blanket grass. Within the castle are the ruins of the former Cathedral of the Isle of Man. The Castle can be hired for private events.

If driving, follow all the main A-Roads into the centre of Peel and then follow the tourist signposts to the Castle turning West along East Quay and then turn northwards over the road bridge onto West Quay, and the castle entrance is situated at the end of West key where there are a snack bar and parking. If travelling by foot from the centre of Peel, head northwards along to the far end of East Quay, where there is a footbridge over the harbour to West Quay, and then follow it northwards to its very end.

Transport:

Although the centre of Peel is well served by buses, they do not go to the castle due to a lack of a turning area there, so one must follow the Directions above by foot along East Quay and then take the footbridge across the harbour to reach the Castle.

Amenities:

At the pay barrier there is a small gift shop that sells limited snacks and soft drinks. There are no cafe or refreshments available at the castle site. Picnics are encouraged. However there is a snack bar serving meals and adjacent parking and toilets, including disability toilets, immediately below the Castle at the very end of West Quay.
