Brief Description:
Originally a Saxon fortification, the castle was built in the early 12th century. In 1136 the Earl of Devon, ruler of the castle, rebelled against the King and following battles with the Royal forces, the castle was destroyed. Plympton Castle was rebuilt under William de Vernon, the Earl of Devon around the start of the 13th century. The castle was eventually taken over by the Crown in 1539. The immediate area around the castle is now a small park.
