Brief Description:

Roker Pier and Lighthouse, Grade II listed, was opened in 1903. Currently it is in the final stages of extensive restoration. There is a tunnel under the pier that originally was used to run gas pipes - a way to supply gas to the gas engines that helped build the pier. Later the tunnel was used by the lighthouse keeper to reach the lighthouse in bad weather. Later this year the tunnel and lighthouse will be opened to the public for guided tours; Please check the website.
