Accessibility:

There is public parking on Talbot Road. There is partial wheelchair access into the church. There are toilets inside the church, but they are not wheelchair accessible. There is a stairlift up the 4 steps to the gents toilets. Assistance dogs are welcome.


Brief Description:

St Andrew’s Church was built 1905-1907 and designed by architect Edward Prior. Its principal benefactor was shipyard owner John Priestman, who dedicated it to the memory of his mother Jane Priestman. A Lych Gate was built in 1920 as a memorial to those who fell in the First World War. It is often referred to as the Cathedral of the Arts & Crafts Movement.

Open 9am – 12pm Monday to Friday. Services on Sunday at 8am and 9.30am, and Wednesday at 10am.

From Newcastle Upon Tyne via A184 (12.8m). Get on A167 from Queen Victoria Rd and B1318. Continue to Newcastle Rd/A184. Follow A184 to Newcastle Rd/A1018 in Sunderland. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Newcastle Rd/A1018. Follow B1291 Fulwell Rd and Side Cliff Rd to Talbot Road.


From Durham via A690 (16.8m). Follow A690, A19 and Wessington Way/A1231 to Northern Way in Sunderland. Take B1291 and Side Cliff Rd to Talbot Rd.
