Accessibility:

The main entrance off an unnamed road near the B5106 is through a wrought iron double gate followed by a flight of around five stone steps. The path to the church door is then flat and level with a level entrance over the threshold.

Brief Description:

Legend has it that St Mary's church in Trefriw was built around 1230 by Llywellyn Fawr, Prince of Wales, so that he and his wife, Joan, could avoid the steep climb to worship at the church at Llanrhychwyn.

That original building was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries and again restored in the 19th century.

The building, a double-naved church constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof, boasts several impressive stained glass windows depicting such scenes as the Madonna and Child, Bishops and one featuring Llewellyn and Joan. There is a 17th century altar in the church but the one that is used for services is a larger Victorian piece. The church did house a 'Breeches' Bible from 1589 but unfortunately this was stolen in 2013.
