Accessibility

  • Although Burnham Museum is situated on Coronation Road, Burnham-on-Crouch, the Museum's Visitor Entrance, including Disabled Access, is located to the rear of the building to the Museum's Upper Gallery, via an access ramp directly from Burnham Quayside Walk. 
  • There is no direct visitor access or disabled access to the Museum from Coronation Road itself and steps-access only from Coronation Road up to the Quayside Walk adjacent to the Museum. 
  • Take care on the approach from the Quayside Walk to the Museum entrance - immediately to its right from the Quay, the cobbled Walkway is uneven, so keep well over from it here as the Walkway surface slopes down towards a break in the guardrail where there is a flight of steps down to Coronation Road next to the Museum.
  • Burnham Museum has two floors: the Upper Gallery and Lower Gallery. There is staircase-access only between the two floors however this is fitted with a chair-lift for disabled use. The staircase has two flights of steps with a mid-landing half-way; the stairs are fitted with a handrail.
  • A disabled-accessible Visitor Toilet is on the Upper Gallery. 
  • Car Parking: Burnham Museum has no car park; however there are a number of public car parks situated nearby: in the town centre, near Burnham Quay and at Riverside Park.  For further details of car parks including those with designated disabled parking spaces - see: 

  • On-street parking is also available on Coronation Road adjacent to the Museum building. However there is step-access only from the road up/down to the Quayside Walk where the Museum's Visitor Entrance is located.

Brief description

Burnham-on-Crouch and District Museum is run by the Burnham History Society (a registered charity) and is manned by volunteers. The Museum focuses on Burnham's local history with  an interesting displays, artefacts and other exhibits which illustrate the history of Burnham-on-Crouch and District, dating back to Pre-Historic times and the Bronze Age, and charting the history of  its people and local trades through the ages:  boat-building: fishing; oyster fishing ( Burnham has been a leading centre for oyster fishing for several centuries); farming; history of the local iron foundry ; Burnham as a sailing and yachting centre. The Museum is also home to Burnham's local history library and also hosts regular talks and meetings by Burnham History Society and Exhibitions.

Burnham-on-Crouch is in the Maldon  district of Essex , approximately 20 miles from Chelmsford. From Chelmsford: Take either: A414 then B1010 to Burnham-on-Crouch,  or alternatively take the:  A1114, A130, Burnham Rd/A132, B1012 and B1010 to Burnham-on-Crouch.

Opening Times 

Normal opening period: Easter - October annually - on Saturdays, Sundays and daily during school holidays. (1.30pm-4.30pm).

Admission Charges: Adults - £1.50, Children - 20p ( at Winter 2020). 

Important - Prior to travelling, please always ensure to check with the venue for up-to-date information on opening days, times and admission charges ( n.b as at Spring 2021 - the UK Government's National 'COVID-19' restrictions have been applicable to the opening and availability of amenities and venues, including museums, which are closed.) 


Transport

By Rail - Nearest Railway Station: Burnham-on-Crouch Station, Station Road, Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, CM0 8BQ. Station operated by Greater Anglia Trains is the penultimate stop on the Crouch Valley line from London Liverpool Street Station. Approx. 50 minutes journey from London Liverpool Street Station. The Station is centrally located in Burnham-on -Crouch town centre close to all local amenities. The Station is manned part-time only. Level access available to the station which has a single platform. Refreshments kiosk. No toilet facilities available. There is a Hearing Loop to the Help Point on the Station. It is approximately 20 minutes' walk from the Station to Burnham-on-Crouch Museum. 

By Bus : Bus Routes 31/31C/31B/31X operated by First Essex Buses from Chelmsford to Burnham-on-Crouch calling en route at stops near Burnham-on-Crouch Railway Station, Burnham High Street. It is a short walk from the final bus stop on Burnham High Street to Burnham Museum. 

The Nearest bus stop to/from Burnham-on-Crouch Museum  is approximately 5 minutes’ walk from the Museum on Burnham High Street in the town centre ( B1021) outside the RIO Cinema. From there the most accessible route to/from Burnham Museum for mobility-impaired persons is via Burnham Quay then take the Quayside Walk to the Museum Visitor Entrance. (There is an alternative walking route from the High Street via Coronation Road; however there is a flight of steps at the end of Coronation Road up to the Quayside Walkway to the Museum Visitor Entrance).

The Museum provides visitor toilets (including a disabled toilet) and a small gift shop. 

Refreshments: There are no refreshment facilities in Burnham Museum but a short distance away, Burnham-on-Crouch town centre has a good range of refreshment facilities (including take-aways, cafes, restaurants and bars) - for visitor information see:  Burnham (visitmaldondistrict.co.uk)
