Burnham-on-Crouch Beach, Essex, CM0 8AG

Brief description

Burnham-on-Crouch is a small town, approximately 20 miles from Chelmsford, located on the northern banks of the River Crouch and approximately 5 miles from where the river enters the Thames Estuary of the North Sea. The beach is situated between the town’s West Quay and Riverside Park, a short distance from the town centre and Burnham-on-Crouch Harbour.

Burnham-on-Crouch beach is  a sandy beach, accessible from the sea wall at low tide at the Riverside Park end of the beach. The River Crouch is tidal and subject to strong currents, so swimming off the beach is not recommended except for very strong swimmers. Visitors are advised to check the Tide Table where planning to access the beach.

There is a very picturesque walk running along the seawall next to the beach between West Quay and Riverside Park, giving fine views of yachts moored or sailing on the river, the Harbour, Marina and across the river on its south bank towards the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds)’s ‘Wallasea Island Coastal Wildlife Reserve’

Burnham-on-Crouch is home to the internationally famous yachting event ‘Burnham Week’ and home to a number of sailing clubs (including  the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club and the Royal Burnham Yacht Club).

A short walk along the seawall from the beach, a dial-a-ferry passenger service operates during the Spring/Summer season from Burnham-on-Crouch West Quay to RSPB ‘Wallasea Island’ which has an abundance of seabird life, including terns – and large numbers of migrating geese and wading birds which arrive in the winter.

Sea fishing, with an appropriate permit, is permitted off the beach in the River Crouch.

Dogs are not allowed onto the beach.
