Accessibility:

The Castle Car Park is opposite the House, and also close by is the Fenwick’s car park. Access into the building is via 6 steps with handrail, wheelchair users would require assistance using these steps. Only the ground floor of the venue is wheelchair accessible as there are stairs to the first floor. Visitors with mobility issues can request to use the Great Staircase. The exit from the first floor is via a spiral staircase, however if you are uncomfortable with spiral staircases you can retrace your steps to the rear staircase. Pushchairs are not permitted in the house, but can be left at reception. There are no public toilets at the venue, however there are public toilets at the Coppergate Shopping Centre nearby. Assistance dogs are welcome.


Brief Description:

Fairfax House is a Grade I Listed Building was built in 1762 as a residence for Viscount Fairfax and his daughter. It remained a private residence until 1865 when it became a gentleman’s club and friendly society. In 1919 it was converted into a cinema and dancehall. In the 1960s it was sold to the city council, although the dancehall remained in use until 1980. In 1984 it was restored and opened as a museum which shows how the aristocracy lived in the 18th Century; it also houses the Noel Terry Collection of English Furniture and Clocks.
