The Old Holy Trinity Church was built in the 15th Century, and converted to a mausoleum in 1877 when a new church was commissioned. Today it is now redundant and only the chancel and north chapel remain intact. It contains stone and brass memorials dedicated to the Wentworth family, These include the Earl of Strafford who was beheaded at Tower Hill just prior to the Civil War, and Charles Watson-Wentworth who was the 2nd Marquis of Rockingham and who helped negotiate an end to the American War of Indepenence. The Fitzwilliam Crypt is open by arrangement for guided tours, please call 01423 322597 to arrange. Buried in the Fitzwilliam Crypt is Viscount Milton who was the author of The Northwest Passage By Land (an account of his travels in Canada).
